In 1998, Keg River introduced the world to the first 85% analysis bentonite sulfur (0-0-0-85S), manufactured with 50% more bentonite clay content. Today, it is sold as Keg85S™ (formerly Keg River Supreme 85).
Why did we do it?
We knew that higher proportions of premium clay content improve every performance aspect of bentonite sulfur. Growers notice the difference almost immediately. Once they try Keg85S they rarely go back to a 0-0-0-90 bentonite sulfur.

Keg85S degrades more thoroughly when activated by water. The smaller average size of sulfur particles after disintegration results in a large surface area available to soil microbes for faster colonization and conversion to sulfate. The results is enhanced agronomic performance.
The additional clay content increases the pastille hardness (crush strength) of Keg85S by over 30% (compared to Keg90S™). This results in noticeably less dust. Retail staff regularly comment on the difference when handling Keg85S.
Increasing the clay content further reduces an already low ignition hazard. We tested Keg85S and Keg90S for ignition of airborne dust. Samples were ground to fine dust for testing and placed in an explosion chamber and measured for ignition at various concentrations. Below are the Minimum Explosible Concentration (MEC) results for both products.

Keg85S can serve as the main sulfur nutrient source if it is regularly applied as part of a nutrient management program. However, if soil sulfur levels are very deficient, or if elemental sulfur is being applied for the first time, inputs must be augmented by a form of soluble sulfate to ensure immediate sulfate needs are met (especially in the case of high sulfur demand crops such as Canola). After repeated applications of elemental sulfur, use of AMS can successfully be reduced or eliminated.
Keg85S can be banded or broadcasted; broadcasting in the fall has the benefit of exposing pastilles to freeze-thaw and moisture over winter for more thorough disintegration.
The application rate is based on agronomic recommendations from soil tests & crop removal rates of sulfur. Repeat applications of Keg85S improves soil populations of sulfur-processing bacteria – the soil becomes more efficient in converting elemental sulfur to sulfate.
